History of Stanshawes Court Hotel

The house now known as Stanshawes Court is a victorian house built in 1874 for Mr N Hooper, but the name of Stanshawes in the parish of Yate is ancient. The history of the name dates back to Richard II, who had a favorite named Thomas Le Despenser. He had a daughter called Isabella Stanshawe, and named the house after her.

During the war of 1914 - 1918 part of the Stanshawe Estate was used asa camp for German prisoners of war. The camp was on the Southern part of Stanshawes Drive, and the people of Stanshawe Court had to have a pass to get in and out of the court.

During the 1940 - 1945 war, the house was used as a hostel by Newman's factory. From then until 1962 the house was used for storage, until it was bought by Mr T Parker, who remodeled the house into Stanshawes Court Hotel.

The Hotel has had a number of owners during the last few years, now it is run by Kevin Langmaid, who is slowly returning the hotel back to its original appearance and atmosphere, making this a family orientated place to visit.

The hotel is said to be haunted by Mr Hooper & Mr Parker, and several sightings and unusual going's on have been reported over the years, please come and visit the hotel and sample the atmosphere.
